Field notes

Alligators in Leonida

Alligators are a reptile species due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI, roaming across the State of Leonida with a particularly strong presence in the Grassrivers region. GTA VI's debut trailer shows them wandering into suburban settings, including footage of one entering a gas station supermarket and another being pulled from a home's swimming pool. The animal's outsized presence in Leonida is even reflected in the state's official seal, itself modeled on Florida's real-world seal, which depicts a person being eaten by an alligator.

First Trailer Sightings

Grand Theft Auto VI’s first trailer depicts alligators beyond the wetlands: surveillance-camera footage captures one moving into a gas-station convenience store, while a separate scene shows another being removed from a private swimming pool. These are confirmed trailer appearances rather than references or background audio.

The sightings place the animals in both developed and residential parts of Leonida, alongside their concentration in Grassrivers. Leonida’s state seal also incorporates an alligator attack on a person. Its design draws from the real Seal of Florida, although the trailer does not identify a real-world species model or any variants.

Earlier Series Reference

Grand Theft Auto V did not include a physically visible alligator. It did, however, contain an alligator-related audio reference beneath East Vinewood: growling can be heard near a sealed sewer passage and a damaged ladder.

The relevant sound file is called sewer_gator.awc. Its placement beside the inaccessible tunnel and ladder alludes to the 1980 film Alligator. GTA VI differs from this earlier reference by showing alligators directly on screen in Leonida.
