Entire GTA 6 map vs. RDR2 playable area

Here’s the honest version: Rockstar still has not published exact map dimensions for GTA 6. What changed on August 27 is the quality of the comparison: Rockstar developers now describe Leonida as about three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area, while sanctioned preview reporting says roughly twice GTA 5 overall, with Vice City itself around twice Los Santos. Those are scale statements, not exact measurements.
Updated after the August 27 reveal
These four numbers do not all measure the same thing. The RDR2 comparison uses playable area; the GTA 5 figure concerns the overall map; the city comparison isolates Vice City and Los Santos; and the eleven-times statement concerns developed areas outside the main city. Combining them into one giant multiplier would be wrong.

This slider preserves the pre-reveal 1.5–2x community range as historical context. Every shape is scaled by area, not traced coastline, and GTA 5’s 49 sq mi baseline is itself fan-measured. The new developer-attributed comparisons above are more authoritative, but they still do not supply a defensible square-mile value for Leonida.
Illustrative area comparison — not a map shape. No official dimensions exist.
At this multiplier, Leonida works out to roughly 85.8 sq mi — 1.75× the size of Los Santos and Blaine County.
Before August 27, no developer-attributed comparison existed. The estimate grew out of community cartography: fans lining up coastline silhouettes, road signage, landmark spacing, and the brief map glimpses in the two official trailers, then scaling those measurements against known GTA 5 geometry. Do that across enough frames and you converge on a range — and the range most analysts land in is one and a half to two times the footprint of GTA 5’s San Andreas.
That methodology is clever, but it’s built on camera-lens guesswork and incomplete data. We now retain it as a historical community estimate rather than presenting it as the current best evidence.
What is beyond dispute is the shape of the ambition: a full fictional state with one dense metropolis and five distinct rural, coastal, and wilderness regions around it. Even without a number, Leonida is scoped like a state, not a city.
“Three times RDR2” and “twice GTA 5” depend on which baseline and boundary Rockstar used internally. Community figures for the older games vary, so multiplying one fan-measured number does not turn a developer comparison into exact acreage. A defensible square-mile figure still needs a published scale or measurement of the shipped game after launch day.
Scale · 0–98 sq mi
| Game | Setting | Fan-measured area | |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA 4 (2008) | Liberty City | | ~6.8 sq mi |
| GTA San Andreas (2004) | San Andreas | | ~13.9 sq mi |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | Five frontier states | | ~29 sq mi |
| GTA 5 (2013) | Los Santos & Blaine County | | ~49 sq mi incl. ocean (~29 land) |
| GTA 6 (2026) | State of Leonida | | Developer comparison: ~2x GTA 5 overall; exact area unknown |
Older-game square-mile figures and the chart scale are community-measured. The GTA 6 row uses a developer-attributed comparison but still has no exact official area.

Whatever the square mileage turns out to be, the region list gives away the design intent: one heavyweight metro in Vice City, then wetlands, an island chain, a port town, farm-and-refinery country, and a mountain park. That’s five different biomes orbiting a city — a spread GTA 5 never attempted. Each one has its own deep-dive page:
01 / VC · Southeast metro
125 places · 25.76° N · 80.19° W
02 / LK · Southern island chain
18 places · 24.66° N · 81.54° W
03 / GR · Southern wetlands
5 places · 25.29° N · 80.90° W
04 / PG · Gulf-coast panhandle
38 places · 30.16° N · 85.66° W
05 / AM · Interior, on Lake Leonida
11 places · 26.75° N · 80.93° W
06 / MK · Northern highlands
8 places · 29.17° N · 81.72° W

Rockstar has not published exact dimensions. The New York Times preview reports a Rockstar comparison of about three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area, while sanctioned creator and press previews attribute a roughly two-times-GTA-5 comparison to Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson.
Rockstar developers have now given comparative scale statements, but the company still has not published square mileage, square kilometers, a final overhead map, or a scale bar. Comparisons are more authoritative than old fan estimates without becoming exact dimensions.
Yes, according to a Rockstar comparison reported by The New York Times: GTA 6’s overall map is about three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area. That still does not establish an exact square-mile figure because community measurements of RDR2 vary.
Rockstar hasn’t said. GTA 5’s map was fully explorable from the opening mission, while other Rockstar games have fenced off areas early on. Until Rockstar confirms either way, this is an open question.
